AI Breakthrough: Claude 5 Helps Solve Complex String Theory Problem
Perhaps we are witnessing the beginning of a new era in science.
Yuji Tatikawa, a professor at the University of Tokyo specializing in quantum field theory and string theory, stated that Claude Fable 5 helped revive a collaborative research project that had been stalled for six months.
Out of interest, Tatikawa shared his research notes with the model. Fable identified an error in the calculations, hit the same dead end as the researchers, but after an additional prompt, developed an alternative approach.
According to Tatikawa:
“It made a non-trivial observation and, essentially, solved the problem.”
He was also surprised that the model independently used SymPy (a tool for symbolic mathematical computation) to write code and verify its own conclusions.
At the end, he added:
“I got the impression that Fable truly understands string theory and even possesses a certain intuition.”
It is important to understand that this is the account of a single researcher, not a published or independently verified scientific result.
However, this is no longer about another incremental increase in benchmarks. This is an example of how an advanced language model helped advance real research in the field of theoretical physics.
