DigUp: EmbeddingGemma 2 Powered Local Search App for macOS
DigUp uses Google’s open‑source EmbeddingGemma 2 to deliver fast, on‑device search of files, PDFs, photos, podcasts and videos on macOS.
Great application of the EmbeddingGemma 2 model from Google.
Someone on Reddit created a search engine for Mac based on it, which works significantly better than the standard Spotlight search in macOS.
It's called DigUp. The app can search not only files but also their contents: PDF, screenshots, photos, podcasts, and videos.
All thanks to embedding‑based search. You don't need to know the exact words. It's enough to roughly describe what you're looking for, and the model will find the most relevant result. For example, the query «де вони говорять про сон» will let you jump straight to the needed moment in the podcast.
The model itself is small, open‑source. It runs locally on a Mac, and your files are not sent anywhere.
Such a search can be implemented virtually anywhere that currently uses local search.
