OpenAI Tests New Model by Rewriting Codex in Rust for Cross‑Platform
OpenAI’s Andrew Ambrosino says each new model must rewrite the desktop Codex in Rust and GPUI, aiming for a single model that can build native Mac, Windows and cross‑platform apps.
Codex head Andrew Ambrosino explained how OpenAI tests new models.
Every time a new model is released, he gives it the same task — to completely rewrite the desktop Codex in Rust and GPUI.
Not to create a demo, but to build a full‑featured native application that works equally across different platforms.
According to him, the difficulty here is no longer just in the code, but also in coordination. The Codex team changes the product so quickly that the model literally doesn’t have time to work with a fixed version.
The idea is that a single sufficiently powerful model could simultaneously support a version for Mac on AppKit, Windows on WinUI 3, and a separate full‑featured version in Rust.
“We’re not there yet. But we’re much closer.”
